Providing a safe,
nurturing,
learning environment to meet the individual needs of
all our
children.
The Selby Preschool
offers early intervention, educational programming and occupational,
physical and speech therapy in five distinct classrooms that are described
below, and in an After School Care program. An important Family Support
Services component serves all children and their families to ensure a
home/school link and provides parenting education and skill building.
The learning style in each preschool classroom is based on
the highly successful Montessori method of learning that introduces children
to the joy of learning at an early age and provides a framework in which
individual and social disciplines go hand in hand.
-
Infant Stimulation
This class provides a secure, nurturing and
stable environment for infants and toddlers up to12 months of age
who have multiple disabilities, developmental delay, Down Syndrome or have
disabilities as a result of their mother’s substance abuse during
pregnancy. These students are at-risk for developmental and/or educational
failure. Nursing services are also provided to children who require tube
feeding and apnea monitoring. Occupational, physical and speech therapy
are also incorporated into the program.
-
Toddler Early Intervention
These classrooms offer secure, nurturing and
stable environments for children, ages one to three, who have the most
severe multiple disabilities, including autism and behavior issues. The
children in these classes are considered to be at a high risk for
developmental and/or educational failure. The program offers critical
medical needs to those requiring tube feeding, suctioning, postural
drainage, apnea monitoring, range of motion therapy, positioning.
Occupational, physical and speech therapy and nursing services are also
provided as needed. Auditory, visual, sensory, cognitive, fine and gross
motor concerns are addressed.
-
Therapeutic Early Intervention
These classrooms offer secure, nurturing and
stable environments for children ages two to five who have the most severe
multiple disabilities, including autism and behavior issues. The children
in these classes are considered to be at a high risk for developmental
and/or educational failure. The program offers critical medical needs to
those requiring tube feeding, suctioning, postural drainage, apnea
monitoring, range of motion therapy, positioning. Occupational, physical
and speech therapy and nursing services are also provided as needed.
Auditory, visual, sensory, cognitive, fine and gross motor concerns are
addressed.

Montessori
School
Two
Montessori Classrooms allow children from three to six to be introduced to
the joy of learning at an early age. Regardless of disability, the
philosophy is that unseen within each child is the person the child will
become. To develop to the fullest physical, spiritual and intellectual
potential, the child must have freedom – achieved through order and
self-discipline. Teachers and aids prepare the learning environment, offer
activities, function as references, provide examples and observe the child
constantly in order to help the process of “learning how to learn.” Among
the features of a “prepared environment” is an ordered arrangement of
sequential learning materials, designed to be developmentally appropriate
and aesthetically appealing. Used in the non-competitive Montessori
classroom, the materials allow each child to develop at his/her own
individual rate, becoming motivated through the work itself, persistence
in a chosen task.
