Providing training programs that improve career opportunities and ensure successful transition into community based employment.
Programs and services include:
In-House Work Contracts CHAC Industries offers sub-contract work assistance for local businesses in the areas of bulk mail preparation, recycling, collating, sorting, packaging, bundling parts, assembly, sub-assembly and manufacturing tasks. In turn, participants of the program have an opportunity to learn a variety of work skills through hands-on, paid, in-house experience. This program not only fulfills a need for business/industry, but it also extends a first step for adult participants toward obtaining eventual employment with the local community.
Mobile Workforce Participants have the opportunity to work in community-based jobs with the support of an Employment Specialist. This experience provides participants with an entry into the world of work, helps them to acquire on-the-job communication skills, learn to problem solve and acquire the attributes to be successful in the workplace in full or part time jobs within local businesses.
Enclaves One of the keys to success for participants is in obtaining employment through an “enclave” situation located at a business site such as the Gifts-in Kind Program of the United Way of Sarasota. The enclave, which is developed by Community Employment Services in cooperation with the Occupational Training Program, enables 3-10 individuals with disabilities to perform work for the host company with the assistance of an Employment Specialist and in a setting in which co-workers are individuals who do not have disabilities. Through actual paid work experiences, participants gain the transferable job skills that are marketable for jobs in the community and will contribute to their long-term job success upon leaving the program.
Custodial Training This program offers instruction on all aspects involved with a janitorial position, including 1) the use of manual and power equipment, such as vacuums, 2) the proper use of chemicals and cleaning applications, 3) health and safety when using equipment and solvents and utilizing proper and 4) effective communication on the job.
Culinary Arts The course offers hands-on, practical learning experiences to ensure that students will meet business/industry employment standards. It has been developed to include hands-on training and instruction in commercial food and beverage preparation, baking, portion control, safety and sanitation procedures, dining room set-up, table service and set-up, tray cleanup, dishwasher operation and general kitchen clean up. It also enhances problem-solving skills and encourages socialization. As part of the curriculum, students prepare the daily breakfast, lunch and snacks for the children enrolled in Selby Preschool and for special events and functions that occur at the agency. “Catering with a Heart” has evolved through Culinary Arts and provides off-campus catering for private and public functions. Participants of Culinary Arts are integral in all facets of the business and acquire marketable skills and self-confidence as a result.
Chair Caning offers participants a unique training opportunity to learn, develop and master a variety of chair caning techniques.
The CHAC Plant Nursery Department offers horticulture training and employment opportunities for participants. All aspects of propagation and raising butterfly-attracting, native, Florida-friendly landscape plants are taught, including maintenance and the sale of products and services.
Enhancements Enhancements include programming that involves consumers with people who do not have disabilities in regular community activities. An art/music program sponsored by the Church of the Palms, a weaving class, and the KALEIDOSCOPE Touring Company for our consumers are just part of these Enhancements. Additional programs that include integrated activities for participants include volunteering for Meals-On-Wheels and at the All Faiths Food Bank.
