A Delightful Musical Theatre Experience Featuring Actors With Developmental Disabilities.

Kaleidoscope is a unique example of the benefits that result from a partnership between performing arts and human service organizations. The Asolo Theatre Company, a not-for-profit, professional theatre and Children’s Haven and Adult Community Services, a not-for-profit human services agency joined together to create an extraordinary program with educational, institutional, personal, and community benefits.

Kaleidoscope combines the expertise of each organization in an innovative program which leverages the power of the arts to profoundly effect the quality of life of the participants.

Kaleidoscope has broken new ground in applying the experience of the arts to this unique and challenging population. We have seen amazing results, using our technique to build life-skills, raise self-esteem, develop inter and intra-personal skills, develop ensemble and group building rapport among members and achieve clinical goals, which had been otherwise unattainable.

Kaleidoscope begins with a five-week summer workshop limited to 18 participants who are carefully screened for attitude, capabilities and potential. The disabilities, ranging from moderate to profound, fall into many categories, including persons with Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and various other mental, physical and emotional disabilities. After a careful selection process, and months of planning, classes begin. The artistic and clinical staff work together to ensure the participants’ progress. On behavioral issues, the clinical team advises and guides. In the artistic areas, goals are set and worked toward by all artistic and clinical staff. Weeks of preparation and rehearsal culminate in joyous performances for cheering audiences. After several years of experience, "graduates" enter the year round touring company which performs for schools, retirement homes, and community groups. Acceptance into the touring company is the culmination of years of hard work and accomplishment, and becomes a badge of pride for these talented performers.
